Sunday Preview 01.06.19

This Sunday at Cornerstone Church...

Life has many unexpected twists and turns. As we navigate through this life, there are many elements that simply do not make sense to us. Are some people just lucky while others are misfortunate? Why does one experience the good things of life while another seems to be bombarded with challenges? And why are those who have all the lucky breaks still seemingly searching for something? As we begin our study of the book of Ecclesiastes, we want to understand that this life will leave us lacking, searching, and dissatisfied unless we understand that there is more than meets the eye. We must understand that our God sovereignly reigns over the affairs of our lives (Eccl. 7:13-14). The Preacher of this book wants us to understand that the best things of this life come from the hand of God (Eccl. 2:24-26; 5:18-20; 8:15), but those things, if pressed beyond their capabilities, will result in terrible distress (Eccl. 1:12-2:23). So he encourages his reader/listener to enjoy the good gifts of God, and to live out our lives in reverent respect of the God of the universe (Eccl. 3:14, 17; 5:7; 7:18; 8:12-13; 12:13-14). In short, life proves to be unsatisfying in and of itself, so we must look beyond this life to find lasting satisfaction. Many saints before the incarnation of Jesus Christ found God to be that satisfying portion or inheritance, and now, after the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, believers find this full joy and lasting satisfaction in being forever united to Him. Jesus truly is “a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14). Join us this Sunday as we begin our journey through the book of Ecclesiastes.
