This Sunday at Cornerstone Church...
Hebrews 6 is one of several passages in the book that has given people great trouble in the area of eternal security, causing them to doubt whether they can ever have assurance that they belong to God. It describes those who would possibly "fall away" from the faith in Jesus (v. 6); it warns them of the deadly consequences of doing so (vv. 7-8); and implores them to continue believing, since it is "through faith and patience [that we] inherit the promises" (vv. 9-12).
While the passage, along with some others in Hebrews, has been interpreted very stunningly and has rattled people's assurance in the past, a contextual examination reveals that the author intends to encourage them. He wants them to stay on the same path of belief that they have been on. Yes, if a person were to abandon faith in Jesus to return to Old Covenant types and shadows, they would not be saved. That abandonment would reveal that they are not saved (despite having tasted of God's grace in the surrounding environment [vv. 4-5]). However, the author is convinced of better for them and he wants better for them. He wants them to keep trusting Jesus, as that is the best way, the only way, to have assurance before God. And, believing that they have genuinely trusted Christ, he encourages them with the fruitfulness he has observed in their lives: "God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints" (v. 10). Join us as we gather to encourage one another to continue to look to our great Savior!
